City Stars FC on Sunday evening was crowned Yei Mayor’s Cup Champions for the year 2014 for the first time after stunning Luzira Super Stars FC four goals to one on penalties.
A first half goal from City Stars winger Abdu Emmanuel secured a 1-1 first half draw after Luzira Super Stars striker Etto Moses hit one in just about 10 minutes of the game.
The draw compelled the two teams to go to penalties after completing a goalless play at the end of the second half with three players selected from each clubs shooting the penalties.
City Stars players scored all the three goals compared to Luzira Super Stars whose players missed their penalties, ending the game on a 3-0 win for City Stars.
Speaking to TCT, Malish David, City Stars FC manager hailed the fans for their support that led them through to the finals.
“I really want to congratulate them for the support that they have shown to us right from the start to the final,” Malish said.
Sixteen teams, including clubs from first and second divisions, participated in the competition which started in November.
Yei Football Association head John James Juma said it was the first time for City Stars FC to win a trophy since its inception in 2006.
“This is a first trophy going to City Stars. Thank you City Stars,” James told players, officials and spectators after the game, urging players to always stick to the football rules and regulations.
“I have seen some did not stick to the rules and regulations, so we urge players to comply,” he added.
Kujo Beneth Edward, the county assistant commissioner for Culture, Youth and Sports, appealed to the authorities and citizens to support sports activities at different levels.
Kujo stressed that sports unite people of different backgrounds, paving the way for peace building and reconciliation.
He said the competition was meant to prepare the players for the upcoming South Sudan Secondary Schools Football Tournament in n Yambio, Western Equatoria state. Kujo called on the players to work hard in preparing for the upcoming competition.
