Yei Central Girls’ Football Club on Saturday evening won the Mayor’s Cup finals after defeating Rainbow Girls two goals to one at the Yei Freedom Square.
The final match was attended by Central Equatoria state minister Stephen Lado Onesimo, local government officials and thousands of spectators.
Mary Konga and Joy Cheka scored two goals for Yei Central, while Rainbow’s Hellen Sunday scored for her team. All goals were scored in the first half, with the teams playing a goalless second half.
Peace Club and City Stars girls were expected to play in the third and fourth place play-off. But the cup was given to City Stars after the technical committee evaluated the club’s wonderful performance in the course of the tournament despite failing to reach the finals.
The state minister commended the football association in Yei for ensuring equal participation of boys and girls in sports development, which aims at building a strong national team.
He pledged to provide playing boots and shin guards from the ministry to the girls after witnessing their spectacular display.
“Sports are really growing in Yei. The girls sport is on high gear. And I will go back to the ministry and see you get playing shoes for all the eight teams,” minister Lado said.
John James Wani, the local football association president, revealed a plan to organize another contest for the ladies, adding that more clubs are coming up though eight are active.
James called for more support to the girls from the local community, business people, county, municipal and state levels, lamenting that most of them lack uniforms and boots, yet they play in a rough ground.
“We have eight girls football teams registered in Yei football association. Not only that, but there are so many others which are not yet registered. In the coming transfer window, we will organize another contest for girls,” John said at the closing.
County sports inspector, Kujo Beneth urged the government to develop the county as a sports centre considering the many upcoming and talented players.
He said the girls will help the county to compete in state or national levels tournament in the future.
